Scorpions

While there are as many as 25 different types of scorpions in our area, only a handful are commonly seen.

  • Arizona Bark Scorpion - This species is not native to Las Vegas, but has become the most common scorpion in the area. This is also one of the most venomous types of scorpion, and its sting can result in serious injury or death. While serious reactions are rare, most stings will cause discomfort or intense pain that usually lasts a few hours.  But some may cause an allergic reaction which should be treated by a medical professional immediately. They are great at climbing and are the most commonly found variety in the home.

  • Giant Hairy Desert Scorpion - This species is native to Las Vegas, but not quite as common as the Bark.  This scorpion grows to about 5 1/2 inches long, making it one of the largest in our area. This type has hair around its stinger, making it easy to identify.

  • Stripetail Scorpion - Similar in size to the Arizona Bark, this scorpion has a distinct stripe running down each side of its tail. Its venom is more mild in comparison to the Bark Scorpion, and it is usually found less often inside of homes and buildings.

Scorpions are nocturnal creatures and are commonly found under rock, leaves, yard debris, and even laundry. They are fond of areas that provide moisture, shade, and food so finding them hiding under items in the home is not uncommon. They are most active in the warmer months of the year, and tend to stay in their nests during the winter.  Trees and shrubs that touch the exterior walls of your homes can give them easy entry, so we recommend trimming them back at least 12 inches. Females give live birth to their babies, and carry them on their backs until they are mature enough to survive on their own.

An easy way to find out if you have scorpions in your area is to use a blacklight while searching at night.  Scorpions will glow under a blacklight and are easiest to find during the warmer months around block walls and decorative rock.  Glueboards are another way to monitor their activity, and should be placed near entry points like garage doors. Our monthly & bi-monthly plans include scorpion treatments to keep them out of your home.
